Cambuslang 33 Dalziel

CAMBUSLANG claimed the honours in a midweek Lanarkshire derby clash
last week.
The Cambus side came back from 14 points down, to record a good win
over the Motherwell side, in their penultimate game of the 2007-08 season.
And the game was given an extra boost when Scotland under-17 international Duncan Weir scored one of the best tries ever seen at Coats Park.
Dalziel opened the scoring, working their first try off a scrum, with
a successful conversion, and their second came after a driven lineout, to put them 14-0 ahead.
However, a nearly full-strength Cambus side were in no mood to let their
heads go down, and fought back immediately.Captain Andy Dick led by example to bring his side back into the game with the
side’s first try of the day, and the conversion kick by Duncan Weir was good.
And Sandy Hutchison scored a second for Cambus soon after, with a move
straight from the training ground, that saw him go over the line between the posts. Weir again converted, to bring it to 14-14,
which was how the first half finished.
After the restart, Cambuslang went ahead for the first time in the game,
when Andy Dick scored again, with another move which has been a success this season and brought him several tries. The successful
Weir conversion made it 21-14.
Then came the outstanding moment of the game, courtesy of 16-year-old
Duncan Weir.He picked up the ball on his own 22 metre line in open play, and took it for a run. But he ran on, and on, seeing
off the challenges of around 10 Dalziel players, including a stunning hand-off that left an opponent four or five metres behind
him, before taking the ball over the line.
Duncan added his own conversion, to put Cambus 28-14 ahead.
With four tries scored, Cambus ensured they would pick up a bonus point,
but there was still one more try to come.
The side’s last try came after a break from Andy Dick, who passed
to Gregor Jones, beat a couple of players, and went on to score in the corner. Weir’s conversion attempt was unsuccessful,
but Cambus were now 33-14 in front.
Dalziel staged a late rally and put Cambus under pressure, found a hole
in the defence, and got between the posts. The try was converted, to make it 33-21.
Speaking afterwards, a delighted Andy Dick said: “It was a great
win - I’m delighted with the way we played, scoring some really decent tries from deep, and getting the win, with a
bonus point for scoring tries.
“But the real highlight of the game was Duncan Weir’s try
- it’s probably the best try that’s been scored in the league all season, and definitely the best we’ve
scored.
